15 Day ‘South Georgia/Antarctica Photo Expedition’ – January 2019

On this 15-day photographic adventure we will explore the wildlife paradises of South Georgia before visiting the amazing Antarctic Peninsula.

We will have a maximum of 9 photographers on this expedition, being led by professional nature photographer and tutor, Michael Snedic. Photographers of all experience levels are welcome. Michael will be guiding you and supporting your photography during the expedition. Not just in taking photographs in the field, but also in reviewing and critiquing your photos along the way.

On this expedition you will have access every day to professional nature photographer and instructor, Michael Snedic. He will be there to help you photograph the stunning scenery and wildlife we will encounter. He will be conducting a series of classes throughout the voyage, as well as being on-hand throughout the outings. As a full-time professional, Michael is an accredited member of the Australian Institute of Professional Photographers (AIPP). As well as being experienced an photographer, he is an experienced photographic tutor, with 15 years experience presenting photography expeditions and adventures across the globe.

He is also a widely-published photographer and writer. Michael’s photography articles and images have featured in numerous publications in Australia and across the world, and he has been a feature writer for Australia’s largest-selling photography magazine ‘Australian Photography’, since 2006.

Michael is also an Australian Ambassador for Lowepro, LensCoat and the Nature Conservancy Australia. Michael loves sharing his photographic knowledge and passion with workshop participants, helping them improve their photographic skills.

On approaching South Georgia, have your camera ready to capture shags, prions and albatross in the water around you. Make your first potential landing in a protected bay of the island, which is one of the most fertile breeding grounds in the world for sub-Antarctic wildlife. The island’s king penguin rookeries are the world’s largest, with populations sometimes numbering into the hundreds of thousands. South Georgia is scattered with abandoned relics and evidence of human activity from centuries past. Visit old whaling stations, including the settlement of Grytviken, which is home to the remains of the famous Antarctic explorer, Sir Ernest Shackleton. Please note that each landing is determined by weather conditions.

POSSIBLE LANDING SITES ON SOUTH GEORGIA:

South Georgia is a wildlife haven, as the breeding site for animals from all over the Southern Ocean. King and Gentoo Penguins, nesting albatrosses, as well as fur seals and the huge Southern Elephant Seals are all examples which we will be meeting on land, with multiple landings per day. More than half of the world’s Elephant Seals breed here, along with more than 100,000 King Penguins.

As well as its amazing wildlife, there’s a lot of human history on the island, including the remnants of sealing and whaling industries. Visiting the grave of the explorer Sir Ernest Shackelton at Grytviken is a highlight for many people.

Enter another world as your ship approaches the mainland of the white continent. Weather permitting, make several excursions and Zodiak landings over the next few days. These could include glacier hikes, visits to research bases or opportunities to encounter seals and penguins. You may be lucky enough to catch sight of a leopard seal during its hunt for food, or meet a curious minke whale while out on a Zodiac cruise. You may also like to take part in the sea kayaking adventure option (reserve in advance when booking your trip) or awaken your senses with a polar plunge into the sea.

POSSIBLE LANDING SITES IN ANTARCTICA:

CUVERVILLE ISLAND

A gentoo penguin rookery is situated on the north end of the island on a rocky beach. Depending on the time of season you arrive, you may see them building nests or attending to their chicks. Giant petrels and kelp gulls breed on the island.

DAMOY POINT

If you are lucky enough to mail a postcard in Antarctica, you’ll likely pass through Damoy Point, the northern entrance to the harbour on which Port Lockroy is located.

DANCO ISLAND

This small island, one mile (1.6 km) in length, is easy to explore and home to gentoo penguins. You can visit the marker of a former British Antarctic Survey hut and watch for a variety of seabirds such as snowy sheathbills, kelp gulls and blue-eyed shags.

ENTERPRISE ISLAND

Located in Wilhelmina Bay, the island was used by whalers. A Zodiac cruise around the island passes a wrecked whaling ship.

LEMAIRE CHANNEL

This strait runs between Booth Island and the Antarctic Peninsula; you’ll see that this is one of the most scenic locations on the western coast, especially during sunrise and sunset. The 6.8 mile-long (11 km) Channel may become impassable when ice fills the narrow passageway, so we’ll hope for clear waters.

MELCHIOR ISLANDS

A group of low islands in Dallmann Bay, on which you may see male fur seals haul-out at the end of the breeding season to recuperate from their battles for supremacy.

NEKO HARBOUR

Little evidence remains that this bay was once used by the floating whale factory ship Neko. You might see some whale vertebrae used by resident gentoo penguins as shelter from the wind. There is an unmanned refuge hut here, erected by Argentina. Climb past the hut and up a steep slope for spectacular views of the glacier-rimmed harbour.

PETERMANN ISLAND

Here, near the Lemaire Channel, you can stand ashore and see the southernmost breeding colony of gentoo penguins. The dome of the island rises 650 feet (200 meters) above the sea, offering a challenging hike for panoramic views. Adélie penguins, shags and south polar skuas also inhabit the island.

PORT LOCKROY

A ‘fun’ destination of sorts, we always strive to journey to Port Lockroy if weather permits. The harbor is on the west side of Wiencke Island. A secret base was built on the harbor during the Second World War as part of Operation Tabarin. It is now designated as a historic site, where Port Lockroy is a museum and post office. Proceeds from your purchases here support the preservation of historic sites from the Heroic Age of Exploration.

WATERBOAT POINT

Of historic interest, you may venture to this unique point, which at low tide is connected to the Antarctic mainland. Zodiacs are used to explore the area when the tide is in. Two scientists studying penguin behavior lived in a water boat on the Point from 1921-22. The remains of their camp have been designated an Antarctic historic site.

AITCHO ISLANDS

This is a group of small islands, some still unnamed, situated in the northern entrance of English Strait. You can often spot a great mix of wildlife here, with gentoo and chinstrap penguins having established rookeries. Southern elephant and fur seals are frequently hauled-out here too.

BAILY HEAD

Also known as Rancho Point, this area is a rocky headland on the southeastern shore of Deception Island. Chinstrap penguins build nests on slopes leading to a high ridge that dominates the natural amphitheater and provides a superb setting for landscape photography.

HALF MOON ISLAND

This crescent-shaped island was known to sealers as early as 1821. Unlike sealers who liked to keep their best locations secret, we’re happy to bring you ashore on this impressive island. Many Antarctic birds breed here including chinstrap penguins, shags, Wilson’s storm-petrels, kelp gulls, snowy sheathbills, Antarctic terns and skua.

HANNAH POINT

Macaroni, chinstrap and gentoo penguin rookeries are located on the point, which is on the south coast of Livingston Island. Due to the rather congested area available to the nesting penguins, you can only visit here from January 10 onwards.

PENDULUM COVE

Hot geothermal waters are found along the shoreline of this cove, named for observations made in 1829 by a British expedition. You may see yellow algae and boiled krill floating on the surface because of the scalding hot water!

PENGUIN ISLAND

Antarctica has two flowering plants, both of which you can find on Penguin Island: Deschampsia antarctica and Colobanthus quitensis. Chinstrap penguins, fur seals and southern elephant seals use the island for breeding purposes.

ROBERT POINT

A nice spot for Zodiac cruising, this point was known to sealers as early as 1820. Chinstrap penguins, kelp gulls and pintado breed here, and whales may be seen in the surrounding waters.

TELEFON BAY

Your Expedition Team will be happy to point out that it is here where the most recent evidence of volcanic eruption on Deception Island can be seen.

TURRET POINT

Chinstrap and Adélie penguin rookeries are found on this point, situated on the south coast of King George Island. The beaches here are often crowded with southern elephant, fur, and Weddell seals hauled-out on the rocks.

WHALER’S BAY

To reach Whaler’s Bay it is necessary to sail through a narrow passage called Neptune’s Bellows. The bay was used by whalers from 1906 to 1931 and is part of a protected harbour created by a circular flooded caldera, known as Deception Island. Along with waddling penguins and lounging seals, you’ll see rusting remains of whaling operations on the beach. Watch for steam that may rise from geothermally heated water springs along the shoreline.

Gentoo penguins have established a rookery on this harbor, situated on the southwest side of Greenwich Island. Here you can see an abandoned Argentine refuge hut and a large glacier that stretches along the east and north sides of the bay. An abandoned sealing try pot is all that remains of the activity that brought men thousands of miles in tall ships to seek their fortune.

The Ocean Endeavour is a great expedition ship, with plenty of vantage points for scenic and wildlife photography from all around the ship. Along with our group the voyage will also have non-photographer passengers and while we will be mingling with them and sharing the ship and the general Antarctic experience, the photographic advice/instruction will be for our group.

On Zodiac outings we usually operate as a group with our own boat, where Michael will always be with you to provide photographic guidance. We work closely with the Quark expedition team throughout (and before) the voyage to optimise operations on both sides to help everyone.

Today you will be transferred from Anchorage to Knik River Lodge in Palmer and enjoy a Helicopter Adventure Glacier Dog Sled Tour.

After a 1-1.5 hour transfer (one way) from Anchorage you arrive at Knik River Lodge. From Knik River Lodge you will take a breathtaking 15 minute helicopter ride. After landing, you will experience a dog sledding adventure that you will never forget. Meet an experienced Iditarod Musher who will teach you to mush your own dog sled team along one of the most scenic snow covered glaciers! (approx. 1 hour on the glacier).

PS - If snow conditions do not allow for dog sledding, your helicopter flight will take you to a glacier for a trek.

Today take the minicoach transfer to Denali.

From the Denali Park entrance you will be transferred by private bus from the train station to Denali Backcountry Lodge. Your Denali Wildlife Drive from the park entrance to the lodge offers the opportunity to search for bears, moose, and caribou.

We will spend a few days searching for the best photographic opportunities, with our experienced local Alaskan Guides there to help us achieve this.

Denali to Anchorage Alaska Railroad

You will know from the very moment you climb aboard the Alaska Railroad, you are riding on one of the best trains in the world. The charm and scenic appeal of this great and vast land is amplified through panoramic windows and underscored by historical narratives of lifelong Alaskan conductors and tour guides. The scenery is sublime and there will be photographic opportunities everywhere!

Kenai Fjords National Park Cruise

Whether you are onboard the Steller Sunrise or Steller Explorer you will enjoy heated cabins, bathrooms, salon areas, sleeping areas, life rafts, and walk around decks for excellent viewing. Each is equipped with the most modern navigational equipment such as radar, global positioning system (GPS), video chart plotters, video depth sounders, and marine radios which allow us to contact other vessels and the USCG at all times. These small vessels will give you the opportunity to get really up close with glaciers and various marine life and wildlife.

Following your cruise take the Alaska Railroad train journey to Anchorage.

Important - Luggage Weight Restrictions

There is a suggested luggage limit of 20 kg for the float plane flight to Katmai including hand held luggage and
camera equipment. A soft sausage-type bag should be used. Excess luggage and hard suitcases can be
stored at Andrew Airways in a secure room until your return.

Today you will be met and transferred by float plane from Kodiak to Katmai Wilderness Lodge.

Katmai National Park is located on the northeast coast of the Alaska Peninsula. The park was first named a national monument in 1918 after exploration following the eruption in 1912 of Novarupta Volcano. In 1980 the monument was enlarged and designated a national park. Katmai has a large population of protected brown bears - more than 2000. As they are not hunted and food during summer is plentiful, the bears are extremely tolerant of humans and extraordinary viewing is possible. Katmai Wilderness Lodge is the only private establishment on the coast of Katmai National Park’s 3.6 million acre wilderness, located in Kukak Bay against a backdrop of majestic mountains. Comfortable accommodation is provided in modern log cabins with private bathrooms. Deluxe meals are served in the dining room and a basic assortment of beverages is included. The lodge is powered by solar, wind and gas generator. Whilst at Katmai Wilderness Lodge all meals and drinks (excluding spirits) are included.

Staying at the Katmai Wilderness Lodge offers guests an exclusive and small intimate bear/wildlife viewing opportunity to experience a true Alaskan adventure. Each day you will set out on landing craft boats (vessels specially designed) in which the bow of the boat lowers into a ramp for easy get on and off access to explore this beautiful wilderness area. Activities include guided bear viewing & hikes, sea kayaking and fishing. Since the lodge is located on the coastline, guests are able to appreciate both the land and the marine wildlife.

Anchorage

Anchorage has over 2500 resident moose that may be found in the metropolitan parks or even downtown.
Anchorage sits at the convergence of Knik Arm and Turnagain Arm, tucked between Cook Inlet and the Chugach Mountains. Sleeping Lady mountain sits across the Inlet, outlined by the Alaskan sunset. Explore the mountains and get a birds-eye view of Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city with the Tordrillo Mountains in the background.

Talkeetna

Talkeetna is the starting point for most climbers, embarking on the journey to climb Denali. Talkeetna is actually closer to the mountain than the Denali Park Entrance. It is home to three converging major glacial rivers and with the Alaska Range and Denali in the background, it is an unforgettable sight.
A variety of hiking trails weave through the area offering alpine forests, pristine lakes, and stunning vistas. Moose and bear may be seen throughout the forests as well as wildflowers and loon on the lakes.

Denali National Park

Travelers in Denali National Park see the relatively low-elevation taiga forest give way to high alpine tundra and snowy mountains, culminating in North America's tallest peak, 20,310' Denali.
During your visit to Denali search for and photograph wolves, Dall sheep, moose, grizzly bears, caribou, ground squirrels, rabbits, the elusive lynx, porcupine, Alaska’s state bird the ptarmigan, golden eagles, and fox

Girdwood

Located between the Chugach Mountains and Turnagain Arm, the resort community of Girdwood is in the northern most rainforest.
Girdwood offers a maze of walking trails allowing guests to get into the wilderness just steps from their hotel. The lush forest is home to wildlife such as moose, bears, ground squirrels, porcupine, and a host of birds., which will be great fodder for your cameras!

Seward

At the edge of the Kenai Peninsula lies a land where the ice age lingers. Nearly 40 glaciers flow from the Harding Icefield, Kenai Fjords' crowning feature. Wildlife thrives in icy waters and lush forests around this vast expanse of ice.

20 Day Antarctic / South Georgia / Falklands Photography Expedition

On this 20-day photographic adventure we will explore the wildlife paradises of South Georgia and the Falkland Islands before visiting the amazing Antarctic Peninsula.

Our 2016 Antarctic workshop spent most of its time working along the coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. This 2017 workshop will revisit some of the highlights of the Peninsula, but the wildlife (and scenery) of South Georgia puts this adventure in a class of its own, and we’ll be visiting the island in one of the peak times for wildlife activity.

14 Day ‘India Wildlife and Culture Photo Safari’

Experience Central India with its unique mix of ancient culture and its breathtaking wilderness. Indian art, culture and spirituality all developed amidst a rich, natural beauty.

We will see vivid Indian art dating back to prehistory, visit sacred Buddhist and Hindu sites, and begin to comprehend the origins of modern India.

We explore the variety and biodiversity of the National Parks of Madhya Pradesh while taking Wildlife Safaris in India’s most beautiful National Parks.

We will visit highland habitats, teak forests, bamboo and grasslands areas as well as riverland areas.

We will go on safari to seek out the big cats—tigers and leopards—as well as monkeys, crocodiles and a huge number of bird species.

Madhya Pradesh has some of India’s most important and significant national parks and reserves.

Satpura National Park is 1400 square kilometres of highland habitat for some of India’s most important wildlife.

Pench Tiger Reserve consists of over 700 square kilometres—primarily of teak forest—and is considered one of India’s finest tiger reserves.

Kanha National Park is one of the largest national parks in India and extends over almost 2000 square kilometres of undulating country.

Bandhavgarh National Park, amidst the Vindhyanchal Ranges, covers about 440 square kilometres and contains a mixture of grassland, bamboo and densely wooded hills.

DELHI

Arrive Delhi by International flight. After crossing immigration and baggage, you will be met by an Inspiration India/ Mantra Wild representative at the arrivals hall, who will transfer you to your hotel (rooms are available from 12 noon).

You will receive a traditional welcome with “Aarti and Tikka” wherein a silver tray with a small oil lamp is used to welcome you, along with a vermilion mark on the forehead.

DELHI reflects the legacy and heritage of Mughal Delhi, which is now known as Old Delhi. Pulsing with energy and colour, Old Delhi is laced by a maze of narrow lanes where you get a glimpse of the many flavours from the wedding bazaar to spice markets to graceful architecture. In contrast to Old Delhi the imperial city or New Delhi, created by the British, has numerous fine colonial structures, magnificent buildings and wide boulevards laid according to the master plans of the great colonial architect Lutyens.

DELHI -BHOPAL-SATPURA VIA BHIMBETKA

Early morning, transfer to New Delhi Railway station to board Bhopal Shatabdi Express (0600/1350hrs).
Assistance upon arrival and drive to Satpura (180 Kms; 4 hrs), enroute, stop at the Bhimbetka Rock shelters, an archaeological site of the Paleolithic era, exhibiting the earliest traces of human life on the Indian subcontinent. Some of the Stone Age rock paintings found among the Bhimbetka rock shelters are approximately 30,000 years old.

On arrival in you are assisted with checking in to your lodge.

SATPURA - PENCH

Early morning start for Pench. We recommend an early start at 0600 hours and arrive Pench in time for lunch.
This will be a long day suggest a day at leisure.

Satpura National Park is cradled in the Satpura Range (Mahadeo Hills) and straddles the State of Madhya Pradesh. With the adjoining Bori & Panchmarhi Sanctuaries, Satpura N.P. provides 1427 sq. kms of unique Central Indian Highland ecosystem cover to India’s wild denizens. Satpura N.P.(set up in 1981 and 524 sq. km) is beautiful and unspoiled. It represents nature at its very best. The fascinating deep valleys, high mountains, rivulets, waterfalls and Tawa’s vast reservoir combine to give this Park an unique beauty. The terrain is extremely rugged and consists of sandstone peaks, narrow gorges, ravines and dense forests. The altitude ranges from 300 Mts. to 1352 Mts. From the 4500 feet Dhoopgarh peak to the almost level plains of Churna the ride is only 60 kms but it takes about 5 hours to travel from the cool environs of Panchmarhi resort to the edge of the Tawa reservoir.

Satpura & Bori abound in Central Province wildlife. The bio-diversity is stunning with over 1300 species of plants, which include numerous rare bryophytes and pteridophytes. While Sal & Teak forests are abundant, Central India mixed deciduous forests cover a major part of the area. An evident eyesore is the rampant and unchecked growth of Lantana. The meadows and valleys have been completely taken over by this invader.

The terrain, which is covered by some of the oldest Sal & Teak forests in India, is home to 50 mammal species, 254 bird species & 30 species of reptiles. The Tiger, Gaur, Leopard, Indian Giant Squirrel, Sambar, Sloth Bear, Chital, Barking Deer, Wild Boar, Rhesus Monkey, Langur, Nilgai, Hyena, Wild Dogs, Smooth Otter, Pangolin, Porcupine, Marsh Crocodile, Ratel, Four Horned Antelope and many other species of wildlife are seen. Birds are seen everywhere and Malabar Pied Hornbills, Crested Serpent Eagles, Crested Hawk Eagles, Honey Buzzards, Paradise Flycatchers, Pittas, Thrushes, Peafowl, Pheasants fill the air with their calls.

Afternoon, enjoy a Boat Safari.

PENCH

Morning, game drive into the park.

Pench Tiger Reserve is India's 19th Project Tiger Park. It is considered to be one of the country’s finest new tiger reserves spread over 700 square kilometres and consisting primarily of teak forest. The population of game is also very high – it has a very high density of prey ( Spotted Deer, Wild Boar, Sambar, Blue Bull and the Indian Bison) and is also home to a very healthy population of Tiger, Leopard, Wild Dog and Jackal amongst other smaller predators. The bird list has over 280 species.

This evening, we have arranged a night safari in a private jeep with a naturalist.

PENCH-KANHA

Drive to Kanha, a distance of 210 kms / 6.5 hours.

Kanha is one of the largest national parks in India extending over 1945 sq. km. of undulating country, which includes a core area of 940 sq km. Kanha has some 22 species of mammals. The most easily spotted are the stripped palm squirrel, common langur, jackal, wild pig, chital or spotted deer, barasingha or swamp deer, sambhar and black buck. Less commonly seen species are tiger, Indian hare, dhole or Indian wild dog, barking deer and Indian bison or gaur. Other animals found in the park are Indian fox, sloth bear, striped hyena, jungle cat, panther, mouse deer, four-horned antelope, porcupine and wolf. Kanha has some 200 species of birds. The commonly seen species of birds include cattle egret, pond heron, black ibis, common peafowl, crested serpent eagle, racket-tailed drongo, and hawk eagle, various species of fly-catcher, woodpecker, pigeon, dove, parakeet, babbler, mynah, Indian roller, white-breasted kingfisher and grey hornbill.

KANHA

Morning and afternoon jeep safari drive into the park. Game drives provide the best opportunity for all types of wildlife viewing, from bird and butterfly watching, to sighting the major prey species and chancing an encounter with a big cat. The drives would incorporate different regions of the park, showcasing its huge bio-diversity. The major mammals include gaur, dhole, barasingha, sambar, chital, muntjac, leopard and tiger. Afternoon drives are predominantly experienced in the Mukki region, often parked quietly aside water holes, waiting and watching for the late evening activity.

KANHA-BANHAVGARH

Today you will be departing for Bandhavgarh National Park (290 kms / 7 hours)
Set amidst the Vindhyanchal ranges, the park covers an area of 437 sq. km. and has a series of ridges running through it. About half the park is covered with fine stands of Sal while mixed forests are found in the higher reaches of the hills. Stretches of bamboo and grasslands are found throughout. The main view area is still in the core of the park with its 32 picturesque wooded hills.

There are more than 22 species of mammals and 250 species of birds. Common langurs and rhesus macaque represent the primate group. Carnivores include the Asiatic Jackal, Bengal Fox, Sloth Bear, Ratel, Grey Mongoose, Striped Hyena, Jungle Cat, Leopard and of course the most famous of all the Royal Bengal Tiger. The other animals spotted in the park are Wild Boar, Spotted Deer, Sambhar, Nilgai, Chinkara and Gaur. The vegetation along streams and marshes is rich in bird-life. The common ones are little Grebe, Egret, Lesser Adjutant, Sarus Crane, Black Ibis, Lesser Whistling Teal, White-eyed Buzzard, Black Kite, Crested Serpent Eagle, Black Vulture, Egyptian Vulture, Common Peafowl, Red Jungle Fowl, Dove, Parakeet, Kingfisher and Indian Roller. Reptilian fauna include Cobra, Krait, Viper, Rat snake, Python, Turtle and a number of lizard species.

DELHI – AGRA- DELHI - DEPART

After an early breakfast, transfer to Nizamuddin Railway Station to board Gatimaan Express (0810/0950hrs) to Agra.

Agra is globally renowned as the city of the Taj Mahal. But this royal Mughal city has, in addition to the legendary Taj, many monuments that epitomise the high point of Mughal architecture. In the Mughal period, in the 16th and 17th centuries, Agra was the capital of India. It was here that the founder of the dynasty, Babar, laid out the first formal Persian garden on the banks of the river Yamuna.

Arrive Agra and experience the sublimity of the Taj Mahal (the Taj is closed on Fridays) - a varying kaleidoscope of solitude, colour and mood. A tribute from a great emperor to the memory of his beloved wife, it was 22 years in the making (1631-1653) and is a cerebral experience that defies description. Widely regarded as the earthly replica of paradise, the TajMahal is likened to “a vision, a dream, a poem and a wonder”.

Lunch at a local restaurant.

Later, guided visit to the Agra Fort - strategically situated along a bend on the Yamuna River. Built in the 16th century AD by three generations of Mughal emperors, it is a superb synthesis of stern military fortifications with delicate interior details.

Post visit, drive back to Delhi and transfer to airport to board your International flight back to home.

3 Day Girraween National Park Photography Workshop – Queensland

Star Trails - After dinner come and enjoy a star trails and light painting session under the incredibly clear skies of Girraween.

7 Day Bird Photography Workshop – Tropical North Queensland

Michael Snedic, one of Australia’s most accomplished wildlife photographers and tutors, has teamed up with FNQ Nature Tours, to present a 7 day bird photography workshop and tour, in Tropical North Queensland. In this workshop, one of FNQ Nature Tours experienced birding guides will help participants find and identify numerous species of birds by studying their behaviour, habits and habitat. Michael’s experience as a leading bird/wildlife photographer and tutor will also be utilised to help you improve your bird photography, including tuition on birds in flight, composition, lighting and correct exposure, focal points and much more.

The Atherton Tablelands is arguably Australia’s youngest landscape being formed from volcanoes as recently as 25,000 years ago. The rich volcanic soils were once covered with rainforest most of which has now been cleared for agriculture. The precious rainforest remnants, which are protected in National Parks, provide habitat for a large diversity of wildlife including twelve wet tropics endemic bird species: Atherton Scrubwren, Bower’s Shrike-thrush, Bridled Honeyeater, Grey-headed Robin, Macleay’s Honeyeater, Mountain Thornbill, Pied Monarch, Tooth-billed Bowerbird, Golden Bowerbird, Victoria’s Riflebird, Chowchilla and Fernwren.

In recognition of the areas rich diversity of birds Birdlife International has classified the Tablelands a Key Biodiversity Area (KBA). Southern Cassowaries are also present as are Sarus Cranes and Brolgas who together stage one of the least known, but most spectacular, daily wildlife events in Australia when they fly in at dusk to roost at Bromfield Crater. Vast numbers of water birds periodically gather at Hastie’s Swamp to create yet another magical wildlife experience. Landscape features like the crater lakes, Barrine and Eacham, the dramatic Hypipamee Crater and the famous Curtain Fig are major attractions in the region.

During the next four days there will be a series of bird and photographic workshops and lectures at Chambers and other special locations including Mt Hypipamee National Park, Lakes Eacham and Barrine, Wongabel State Forest, Hastie’s Swamp, Nerada Tea Plantation (Tree Kangaroos), Peterson’s Creek (Platypus) and the Curtain Fig and the Cathedral Fig Trees. Evening trips to Bromfield Crater for the Cranes and near Atherton for Grass Owls should provide challenging photographic opportunities.

This is the day we would like everyone to arrive. Our first workshop session will be an introduction to the group and leaders, an overview of the week and an explanation of the basic camera settings. Michael will also check everyones settings. This session will be outside on the Cairns Esplanade, a wonderful location for birding and probably the best location in Australia for observing and photographing shore birds. The time will be determined by when everyone is able to get there but we ask that participants aim to be in Cairns by early afternoon.

We start the day with a walk along the Cairns Esplanade where there will be plenty of birds to photograph. The tide should be favourable for wading birds and there is always a good selection of species in the trees including Double-eyed Fig Parrots, Torresian Kingfishers and Varied Honeyeaters. After breakfast, we start our journey to the Atherton Tablelands. Our first stop will be Davies Creek National Park, with highlights being the Rufous Owl and White-browed Robin. The creek flowing over granite boulders is a very photogenic landscape. South of Mareeba Red-tailed Black-Cockatoos often frequent the roadside Eucalyptus trees.

After settling in to Chambers Wildlife Lodges , our accommodation for the next 5 nights, most of the rest of the day will be devoted to learning how to find and identify birds with Barry. This session is cameras down binoculars up so that you concentrate on learning the skills of finding birds by sight and sound, identifying them using field marks and observing their behaviour. You have the rest of the week to practice these skills and get your photographs. Set in the tropical rainforest Chambers is an ideal location for this workshop. Over many years Victoria’s Riflebird and Spotted Catbirds have been encouraged to visit feeders and the cabins and many other species feed in the surrounding forest and gardens.

Visits will also be made to Petersen’s Creek to see Platypus, Nerada Tea Plantation for Tree Kangaroos, Bromfield Crater for the Crane fly in and at Chambers spotlighting for wildlife including Striped Possum, Sugar Gliders and Sooty Owl.

Lunches will be at the Teahouse at Lake Barrine and Nerada Tea and pack lunches at various locations. Dinners will be at Chambers Lodges, Malanda Hotel and Yungaburra Hotel.

Michael and your birding guide will be available for private sessions and advice throughout the workshop and there will be some free time for you rest or just to spend time birding or photographing on your own.

The 8 Day Bird Photography Workshop with Michael and co-tutor, Barry Davies, is an unforgettable birding experience with a few mammalian surprises thrown in for good measure!

As a keen bird photographer, I know that it takes a lot of local knowledge, time, travel and expertise to maximise your opportunities to view and photograph endemic and target species. 8 amazing days turned into 5101 images, 179 bird species observed, 13 other fauna species (not including fish) and 42 new birds for my list!

The trip was seamless- the guys will make sure that you are feed and watered exceptionally well and have very comfortable accommodation for a well deserved rest each evening.
