With just six guests, a private mobile tented camp and custom built 4x4 game vehicle, you’re guaranteed an unmatched level of exclusivity!

Botswana sunset

We’ve partnered with arguably the very best mobile safari operator in Botswana to create a true photographic adventure that offers a wonderful close to nature wilderness experience.

Apart form a tailor-made Botswana photography safari, taking you to the most amazing locations and wildlife sightings, Professional and passionate Photographer Michael Snedic will be there throughout the safari to make sure you achieve the best possible images from your safari.

We will seek out elephants, lions, endangered African wild dogs, hippos, giraffes, cheetahs, leopards to name a few. In the Chobe region we photograph from the comfort of boats on ay one and game vehicles throughout. When we move into the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Okavango Delta it’s 4x4 game drives, a walking safari and mokoro.

We’re not providing the most luxurious tents dripping in fancy furnishings. Our ethos is all about the safari experience and guiding. You can expect an exclusive mobile camp and team providing personal service, lovely food and all the creature comforts you need for a great time!

There’s something simplistic about spending time in our own private and small, low impact camp in the heart of Botswana’s wilderness. We photograph wilderness and wildlife at sunrise, day time, sunset and night time. Each evening we will fall asleep to the sound of grunting hippo, roaring lions and under a canopy of stars, but inside your wonderful canvas tent - home for the duration. Our private guide is passionate, knowledgeable and we have him all to ourselves for the entire trip!

We are not bound by the constraints of an organised lodge safari - so there’s greater flexibility in lingering longer at sightings we want to photograph.

Accommodation is in canvas tents with ample standing room, camp beds and mattresses, bed side tables and gauze windows. To the rear of each tent is an open ensuite bathroom with chemical toilet, bucket shower and hot water.

A camp fire area and dining tent are set up for our social area.

We are fortunate to have access to such amazing, photogenic places and we should be using those gifts to help us sell travel, support local communities, and protect the wild spaces and the wondrous inhabitants that mean so much to all of us.

Our team is committed to continuously pushing the envelope, listening to your feedback and responding to your needs.

We hope you will join us on this journey.

August 6 - 7
Photographic safari activities include game drives, walking safaris, night drives and mokoro excursions. We spend our time between the dry-land habitats of the leadwood and camel-thorn woodlands and savannahs and the riverside and marshy back-waters of the Khwai. Expect to see excellent elephant numbers, lion, leopard, buffalo, red lechwe, wildebeest, giraffe, kudu, sable, roan and impala. If we're lucky we may see wild dog and cheetah. Leopard are very elusive. This is a mecca for birding, particularly Bat-Hawks, Cuckoo Hawk, Eagles galore and waterbirds.

Today we pack up and game drive to Moremi along the Manuchira Channel. We will weave from the riverside and floodplains into mopane veld and woodlands so it's a truly beautiful scenic day. We pass Dombo Hippo Pools and stop to photograph hippo. Onwards to camp photographing whenever we wish to stop! Moremi Game Reserve
August 9 - 10
Photographic safari in Moremi. Habitats here range from wide-open floodplains, marshes, lagoons, papyrus fringed channels, vast reed-beds of Miscanthus and Phragmites, woodland and savannah. As a result of the extremely variable habitat the diversity of both wildlife and birdlife is excellent.
August 11
Following breakfast and early morning game drive, you'll be transferred to Maun where arrangements end.

11 Day Kimberley Coast Photography Expedition

  • mitchell_falls_roderick_eime_flickr

11th to 21st of July 2023

FULLY-BOOKED!

Join pioneering small ship expedition cruise company Heritage Expeditions and WildNature Photo Expeditions, on a thrilling in- depth exploration of Australia's world-famous Kimberley Coast. This area is one of the world's most pristine and untouched wildernesses, and you will experience it onboard the luxurious, 140-guest expedition ship Heritage Adventurer, as well as plenty of landings.

Forged by nature and spanning more than 400,000 square kilometres, Western Australia's wild and remote coastline marries a treasure trove of towering, fractured iron-tinged red cliffs, torrential waterfalls, azure waters, hidden coves and caves, secluded white sand beaches, magnificent reefs and rare and endangered wildlife with indigenous customs and connections to an ancient land, and rich history.

Best explored by expedition vessel, our Kimberley cruises allow an up close and intimate exploration and immersion of this rugged wilderness dwarfed by nature on an unfathomable scale. Highlights of our voyage include the unforgettable spectacle of King George Falls cascading 80-metres down 2,000 million-year-old towering cliffs, the outdoor galleries showcasing the 60,000-year-old Aboriginal rock art of the Gwion Gwion and Wandjina people, World War II relics and early explorer history.

At Talbot Bay we will experience the power of the region's massive tidal movements and the world's only Horizontal Falls described by David Attenborough as "one of the greatest wonders of the natural world", and marvel as the world's largest inshore reef system at nearby Montgomery Reef 'rises' out of the water with the falling tide.

Hidden among jagged sandstone monoliths, the final resting place of the remarkably preserved skeleton of a WWII Douglas DC-3 Aircraft awaits discovery at Vansittart Bay, while a glimpse into Australian colonial history can be found carved into the trunk of the centuries old Mermaid Boab Tree at Careening Bay. Enjoy astounding wildlife encounters and observations from the region's iconic saltwater crocodiles through to the birding paradise of the Lacepede Islands and one of the world's largest and most pristine mangrove systems along the Hunter River home to White-bellied Sea Eagle, Osprey, Red-headed Honeyeater, Blue- spotted Mudskippers, Fiddler Crabs and more.

Discover an ancient landscape like no other as we expedition cruise the untouched beauty of Australia's iconic Kimberley and experience the truly epic scale of this magnificent region by ship and Zodiac on this unforgettable Australian adventure.

We will have a maximum of 8 photographers on this expedition, led by professional nature photographer and tutor, Michael Snedic

Photographers of all experience levels are welcome. Michael will be guiding you and supporting your photography during the expedition. Not just in taking photographs in the field, but also in reviewing and refining your photos along the way.

Health and Fitness

Anyone in normal good health can join us on this adventure. There are no special fitness requirements, although we will be often climbing into and out of the inflatable Zodiac boats, and walking on shore. Out on the ocean and exposed to the elements it can get quite cold. But it is summer and at times in the sun it can be quite warm.
The ship has a doctor and basic medical facilities on board. If you have specific health concerns or dietary requirements the staff at Heritage will be able to advise you. There’s also a gym on board if you feel the need to get extra workouts. Actually, with the excellent meals provided on these trips it’s not hard to put weight on, so some people like this option.

17 Day Japan Islands Photography Expedition

The ultimate exploration of Japan’s wilderness, beyond its national parks and last frontier – Hokkaido. Translating in English to ‘Northern Sea Circuit’, Hokkaido is Japan’s northernmost and least developed island, and a world away from the country’s more traditional and contemporary cities.

Cruise_A.Russ

WildNature Photo Expeditions and Heritage Expeditions, pioneers in authentic small ship expedition cruising, invite you to join them on the ultimate exploration of Japan’s wilderness, beyond its national parks and last frontier – Hokkaido. Translating in English to ‘Northern Sea Circuit’, Hokkaido is Japan’s northernmost and least developed island, and a world away from the country’s more traditional and contemporary cities.

Bordered by the Sea of Japan, Okhotsk and the Pacific Ocean, Hokkaido’s rugged landscape features a mountainous centre, complete with volcanic plateau, and is rightly famous for its volcanoes and hot springs. Among its multiple plains is Kushiro, the largest wetland in Japan and home of the Red-crowned Crane, one of the world’s largest and rarest cranes and iconic symbol of Japan where it is also known as the ‘bird of happiness’.

shibazakura_ben&gab

During our semi circumnavigation of this remarkable island we plan to explore to the outlying Rebun and Rishiri Islands, venture into national parklands, observe wildlife and experience traditional cultures and the swathes of colourful flowers Hokkaido is renowned for. Our voyage also includes a day in South Korea’s Ulsan visiting the fascinating UNESCO World Heritage Site Gyeongju – the ‘museum without walls’ among other highlights. We’ll also visit the incredible UNESCO registered Global Geopark Dogojima Island, world famous gardens, the serene lakes and forest of Juniko (12 Lakes) park, observe wildlife and discover the fascinating art of Japanese paper making on our visit to the historic town of Matsue with its impressive 17th Century castle.

We hope you can join us for this rare opportunity to join this voyage including Japan’s most enchanting isle as we explore the unspoiled nature, primeval wilderness, astounding rare wildlife, limpid lakes and alpine flowers during this unforgettable adventure.

About Lord Howe Island

Rising majestically out of the Tasman Sea 550km off Australia, World Heritage Listed Lord Howe Island is a photographer's paradise.

Fed by a mix of warm and cool currents from The Great Barrier Reef, New Caledonia, New Zealand and Australia, this crossroads in the South Pacific is a treasure-trove of fauna and flora housed on a 7 million year old extinct volcano.

At the southern end of the island, the often cloud-covered twin peaks of Mt Gower and Mt Lidgebird rise perpendicular form the sea. To the north, the sheltered coral lagoon (one of the most southerly coral reefs in the world) arcs around the tiny settlement of Lord Howe. Ancient rainforests cover the slopes, and kilometre after kilometre of white sandy beaches and rocky shores await exploration by you and your camera.

Spring has been chosen not only for its favourable weather and warming seas, but particularly for the incredible bird-life, which descends on the island for the breeding season. Many exotic sea-bird species nest on the rocky shores, including terns, shearwaters, gannets and tropic-birds, along with the famous Lord Howe Island Woodhen in the forested areas.

About the Lord Howe Island Tour

This workshop will be presented by professional wildlife and nature photographer and tutor, Michael Snedic. Upon arrival at Lord Howe you’ll be transferred to our workshop base, the centrally-located Ocean View Lodge, only a short stroll from the beach. Your package includes fully-cooked breakfasts (with coffee/tea) each morning and a Welcome Dinner on Sunday night. It will include a blend of structured lectures including informal discussions and one-on-one tuition time, as well as a boat cruise with snorkelling. These sessions will be interspersed with free time to make up your week of photographic learning.

Photographing Rays on Lord Howe Island

Photographic Prerequisites

This workshop is suited to the beginner, intermediate or serious enthusiast. A digital SLR (Single Lens Reflex) camera is recommended, however, any camera that has manual functions would also be suitable. A wide-angle and telephoto lens (and a macro lens if you own one) is recommended. A sturdy tripod is also necessary, especially for our landscape photography sessions.

Flights

You can book return flights via Qantas link from Sydney (I can recommend a travel agent who can help you with your flight booking, if required).

White Tern

Equipment

One of the wonderful things about visiting the island at this time is the abundance of birdlife and their relative fearlessness. Unlike some other locations you won't need 800mm lenses to make full-frame portraits of the birds. Telephoto lenses up to 200 or 300mm can be fine, although there'll always be times you want more. For landscapes, a decent wide-angled lens is recommended. A tripod is also essential for our sunrise/sunset shoots and they can be packed into your main suitcase.

When capturing photos of action such as birds in flight, the optical viewfinders and fast autofocus of DSLRs really shine. We will be helping you take advantage of all these features. Some of the "CSC"/mirrorless cameras can do good work here too. Compact cameras make reasonable backup cameras, but their reduced image quality and sluggishness would make them frustrating as primary camera bodies.

Rainforest Lord Howe Island

If your luggage allowance allows, we encouraged you to take a laptop computer to help you review and safely store your photos. Reviewing your images is an important step in improving your techniques for the next photo session and making the most of your limited time on the island.

Many of the locations we will visit on the island are a short walk from our accommodation, for some we'll travel by bus but some can require uphill climbing on uneven paths. It's not highly-technical climbing though, and we will have rests along the way. As far as your gear goes this does mean that not only do you need to be able to get your gear to the island, you'll need to be able to carry it along bush tracks. There's not much scope for roller camera bags in the field!

Internet access

There is web access available via WiFi at our accommodation and at various locations around the island.

View from Malabar Hill - Lord Howe Island

Day 2

It’s up early for a pre-dawn shoot at Ned’s Beach, just a short distance from our base. Here you will photograph the sunrise over the beach.

After breakfast, we’ll head off for a cruise onto the lagoon in a glass-bottom boat, which will include some snorkelling in one of the most renowned coral/fish areas in the world! You will see amazing coral reefs, as well as huge green turtles, rays, sea snakes and lots of incredibly beautiful fish, in all sorts of shapes and colours. Time to get those underwater compact cameras out :-))

After our snorkel, we will land ashore and have morning tea, followed by a bird photography session. With the variety of birds on Lord Howe Island, we should find lots of subjects to photograph, including thousands upon thousands of Sooty Terns nesting on the beach, then it’s off for a short walk to photograph Old Gulch. This is followed by a walk up the Mt Eliza track, for a chance to photograph the spectacular views over the turquoise lagoon of North Bay, southward to the twin peaks of Mt Gower and Mt Lidgbird. We will return via boat back to our starting point, close to our accommodation.

Sooty Tern

Day 3

After a sleep in and breakfast, Michael will present and audio-visual on wildlife and landscape photography. This will be followed by a trip out towards the southern end of the island, where we will look for and photograph as many bird species as we can find, include the Lord Howe Island Woodhen.

In the afternoon we will head to Lover's Bay for some seascape photography and any other birds we can find.

After breakfast, there will be an image critique session, where Michael will offer critique on photos taken so far.

Late in the afternoon, we start our slow walk to the top of the sea cliffs at Malabar (situated just behind our accommodation). The cliffs themselves are spectacular and the views to the north across the Admiralty Islands are remarkable. If you enjoy macro photography, there are various macro subjects along the way, as well as different bird species such as Masked Boobies and Red-tailed Tropicbirds at the top of the cliff. On the way back, there will be a sunset shoot where you can get great shots overlooking the island, before heading back to base.

View from Mt Gower

Options include a guided Mt Gower climb; a SCUBA dive; another snorkelling trip or fishing charter, or maybe a boat trip out to Ball's Pyramid. In the mangroves at Buffalo Creek Red-headed Honeyeaters, Green-backed Gerygone, Lemon-bellied Flycatcher, Grey Whistler, Red winged Parrots and Common Sandpiper are found and the rarely seen Chestnut Rail and Large-tailed Nightjars frequent that area on dusk.
Various seabirds and waders are also possible. We will visit the Botanical Gardens to look for Rufous and Barking Owls.

After breakfast, we drive to Fogg Dam with its spectacular diversity of water birds including Comb-crested Jacanas, Black-necked Stork, Magpie Geese, Straw-necked and Glossy Ibis, Pied Heron, Plumed and Wandering Whistling Ducks, Green Pigmy Geese, Whiskered Tern, Caspian Tern and Brahminy Kite. Saltwater and Freshwater Crocodiles are also found here.
A boardwalk on the edge of the lake is a good place for the endemic Rainbow Pitta, Little Kingfisher, Rose-crowned Fruit-Dove, Shining Flycatcher, Little Bronze-Cuckoo, Rufous-banded Honeyeater and Broad-billed and Lemon-bellied Flycatcher.
Along the Arnhem Highway we will stop at a small waterhole for Crimson, Long-tailed, Double-barred and, if we are very lucky, Gouldian Finches. The first planned stop in World Heritage listed Kakadu National Park is Mamukala Wetlands where the numbers of water birds can be spectacular and there may be the possibility of seeing some species not seen at earlier sites.

Day 4 - Kakadu National Park – Aug 10

A dawn cruise on the famous Yellow Waters Billabong is the perfect start to the day. The early flights of the waterbirds are a great spectacle. After breakfast at Cooinda spend time photographing the wildlife close to Cooinda. Back in Jabiru we visit the Bowali Visitors centre then have lunch. After a break in the middle of the day travel north to the Bardedjilidji walk and the art sites at Ubirr. Sunset at Ubirr is a Kakadu tradition and a great way to finish the day. Birding highlights include species previously listed and Long-tailed, Double-barred and Crimson Finches and many more. Amongst the sandstone outcrops two special locals are the Chestnut-quilled Rock-Pigeon and Sandstone Shrike-thrush. Mammals seen here include Common Wallaroo, Agile Wallaby, Short-eared Rock Wallaby, Narbalek and Sandstone Antechinus. At nearby Cahills Crossing, the causeway across the East Alligator River to Arnhemland, Saltwater Crocodiles are easily seen. After sunset have dinner at the Border Store.

Breakfast and dinner included.

Sunset over Yellow Water

Day 5 – Kakadu National Park – Aug 11

Have an early start to get to Nourlangie Rock and Angbangbang Billabong when the birds are most active. Another highlight there would be seeing, and photographing, the Black Wallaroos that are endemic to the Arnhemland Plateau. This is a good location for the locally endemic Banded Fruit-Dove, White-lined Honeyeater, Chestnut-quilled Rock-Pigeon and Partridge Pigeon. Go to Cooinda for a day time or a late afternoon cruise on Yellow Water. It is another opportunity to get close to, and photograph, huge numbers of birds. Large Saltwater Crocodiles are also a feature of this cruise. White-bellied Sea-Eagles have territories along the billabong, large numbers of Nankeen Night-Herons roam the banks, and Bar-breasted and Banded Honeyeaters live in the riverside vegetation.
